Marathon Must Have Giveaway

by ashleyd on October 24, 2011

Running a second marathon has been harder than I expected due to this year’s travel schedule. But, due to your motivation and support each day, I was able to successfully train in multiple different cities across the US, knowing that you all were waiting to read that day’s run recap or race review. On the worst of days it were your comments, tweets, and Facebook messages that made me smile and pull on my running shoes even when I was tired and didn’t feel like it.

Therefore, as a thank you, I am hosting a Marathon Must Have giveaway to thank you all!  These are a few of my favorite things that I’ve relied on for my long runs, races, and training in between! As you can tell from the picture below, I’ll be wearing some of these items for the big day in two weeks!

IMG_5078 The winner will receive the following, in the color and size of their request, based on availability.

There are four ways to enter, each one will give you a better chance to win! Please leave me a comment letting me know you did.

Follow Healthy, Happier Bear on Twitter

Leave me a comment with a question you’d like me to answer in a future Q&A.

Great giveaway! My favorite workout class in NYC is spinning at Crunch. There are two teachers I love: Melinda and Matt. They both motivate me SO much with their awesome music and inspiring screams during class.

Though Hot Power Yoga at PURE is a VERY close second. I took it twice, fell in love, then had my heart broken when I saw the membership prices. Hehe.

not entering the contest but what an awesome one! If you see a blonde girl named Liz hanging around the Union Square soul cycle tell her Heidi said hi :) I miss her. She’s amazing and a soul cycle junkie :) (she works there i think, we used to work together in greenwich)

I’m pretty new to this whole fitness thing, but I’m always pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoy Total Body Conditioning at NYSC in Rego Park. It is the perfect mix of strength and cardio!

I’d love to try soul cycle! I’d say my favorite workout class in the city is core fusion at exhale. I love barre classes and it is one of the best.

great giveaway! my favorite class in NYC is cardio sculpt at NYHRC — it combines cardio and weights (which i struggle to do on my own!) for an awesome workout. the instructor is great and always switches it up, so it never gets boring!

Love this post! I HAVE to try that pasta.

I gave the new SoulCycle a “spin” on Sunday late a.m. and really dig it! The class felt SO good. I have to say that spinning is probably my favorite class at any gym, and I love Core Fusion too! In the future, I’d love to try a Tara Stiles yoga class. Can’t beat the price! ;)

I would love to try out Soul Cycle!

My favorite NYC class is Matt Pest at Crunch 59th street. He is beyond motivating and always makes me want to work extra hard. Also, it doesn;t hurt that he is very nice too look at:)

Shannon February 7, 2011 at 10:26 pm

Great giveaway! I haven’t tried too many classes in NYC yet, but I do love Pure’s Hot Power class. However, my budget is more of a Yoga-to-the-People one, and I really enjoy their hot power classes at the 38th St. location. I’ve also been getting into Total Body Conditioning at NYSC lately – kind of like Body Pump (I guess?) – because it motivates me to lift weights, which I normally hate doing on my own.

Great giveaway! I’ve been wanting to check out soulcycle and union square is so convenient! I used to love pilates classes with weights at reab pilates and now my gym, 24 hour fitness, has added one too!

This is so exciting as I have been wanting to try Soul Cycle for FOREVER! My favorite class is at a small pilates studio on the Upper West Side called Pilates Shop/Yoga Garage. It is a tiny little space but the workout is amazing! The guy who runs the place was a dancer and when he teaches I just feel so much more graceful. Such a great giveaway!

Reply

Lindsay February 7, 2011 at 10:49 pm

I have never been much of a class person, but am starting to get into it. I really enjoy the spin and strength training classes at Club H fitness and Sports Club LA. I love spinning and haven’t tried Soul Cycle yet but am dyinggg to! Great giveaway- hope I win and can try it soon :)

Reply

megan February 7, 2011 at 10:50 pm

I love BPW: body, pilates and weights at The Sports Club/LA on the UES. It’s as close to body pump as I’ve found in NYC and the teacher is great. A total body workout in one hour!

Reply

As basic as it is, I absolutely love Total Body Conditioning at NYSC. I always leave the class with my muscles shaking and knowing that I just put in a solid hour of pumping iron without my usual vice of distracting myself.

Super fun giveaway!
My favorite classes are definitely Corefusion classes at Exhale – so different than anything I do on my own, so I feel like I’m getting a great workout! Although the Yogaworks class we took together is pretty high up there as one of the coolest classes I’ve taken :)

Reply

Have you tried Stacy’s Soul Bands class at Soul Cycle. Truly AMAZING!

Reply

Alexandra February 7, 2011 at 11:43 pm

Woah–what a SUPERB giveaway idea. Im a boring white girl with ZERO rhythm but I have to tell you that the hip hop class at NYSC is one of the most fun things ive ever done. It was fun, sexy and sweaty! I may not have 100% kept up with the choreogtaphy but i did manage to break it down during the freestyle part at the end.

Reply

Allie February 7, 2011 at 11:49 pm

My fave NYC class is Darryl Gaines’ TranscendCycle. He is incredibly uplifting, on the beat with the best music, making you work and sweat but having a great ride too. His spin classes are out of this world, intense cardio mega sessions. And when he walks by your bike he recognizes how hard you are working with a nod and a dance, too fun! Am excited to try SoulCycle sometime soon in their new location, near where I live!

I love spin classes at NYSC in rock center! Favorite weeknight meal is butternut squash ravioli with brussel sprouts, staple in my house. Your dinner looked delicous :)

Reply

ally February 8, 2011 at 8:33 am

Core Fusion at Exhale is my favorite workout of all time! There is NOTHING like it. It is super challenging but also rewarding because you can actually feel your muscles getting stronger and tighter. Also- it isn’t too shabby to work out at a nice spa! The instructors are GREAT, the music is terrific, and the overall program is just the best. Highly recommend!

A close second place would go to the urban rebounding class at NYSC. It is so fun to jump up and down on a trampoline for 45 minutes and actually get a full workout while doing so! Burning calories in a way that is disguised as fun?? The best! :)

Zoe February 8, 2011 at 8:48 am

Reply

SoulCycle! Its the only workout I have ever done where the time flies by and at the end of the class I think, I could totally do more. Its like therapy mixed in with cardio and you can loose yourself in the music. You can actually just turn your thoughts off and get the same high you would get from going out dancing at night with your friends, minus the drink calories! :)

Great giveaway. My questions: Your race goals for after the NYCM? How much sleep do you average per night? Your favorite running routes in New York?

Reply

Margaret October 25, 2011 at 9:46 pm

Yay! Here I come NYCM! I’ve done all the training and I’m ready to kick butt, and make my dinner reservations. :) I think on question and answer I’d like to hear about alternatives to running, because after marathon training I always get so burnt out on running, that I have to get creative to find something to keep me sweating and healthy, until I fall in love with running again… it is a love/hate. I hope you have a wonderful run through NY next week, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for good weather.

Sweet! I would love for you to talk about what it’s like to live and dine in NYC, and how to balance eating out with saving money and cooking at home.

3. My question is- what is your favorite pre-race or pre-long run food that fuels you best? Do you think it’s more beneficial to eat this food the night before or first thing before the run?

Awesome Giveaway!!!!
I am running NYC too and it’s my first marathon EVER!!!! I’ve been stalking you and Theodora to get the inside scoop on the race! If I could only catch your ear for about thirty minutes…
Do you know your race number and corral? Again, I’m a secret blog stalker :)
I’m also secretly jealous of your blog meet ups! Definitely not as many “healthy/running” bloggers in Fairfield County and I’m too afraid to reach out and invade others “circles”.
I’m crossing my fingers and my toes that I win this one…if only for the compression sleeves!!!
Happy Almost Wednesday!!!

Q&A: I know you mentioned before that you were going to cut back on some the strength training and focus more on agility exercises. In general, do you think the weight training has helped or hurt your training?

Good luck with the marathon–I have enjoyed reading for awhile!

Really great giveaway. So now that I am increasing my mileage, I’m finding that it is a physical wall I am hitting not mental. Around 3-4 miles my mind has come to terms with the fact that I’m running and I’m not stopping. But my legs feel like bricks and my hips start to get really tight. My question is have you ever experienced this? And how do I decide if it is right for me to train for further races in the future?

My question is about your routine and fitting it all in and maybe some
More detailed workouts with your trainer not the whole thing obviously but weather or not it was total body or upper body stuff like that. Also what do you think has been the most effective in weight loss this time around with the marathon and PT!

Congratulations on your dedication for training for your second marathon! My question for you is how you balance your hectic work day, time with Bo, running/gym and social time? Do you plan out your workouts and meals to be cooked at home at the beginning of the week day-by-day or do you have set goals each week that you hope to accomplish, in no particular order? You mention that you work VERY long hours so your dedication to training is truly motivational and inspiring!
