New Discovery: Yoga Download Shoulder Opener

Happy Tuesday!

Unfortunately, today was the second Tuesday in a row that work has kept me from my favorite class at Equinox.

IMG_2597 (640x478) I came home, rolled out my pink yoga mat, lit my favorite new candle, and searched iTunes for some yoga videos.

Luckily, I found that Yoga Download has a free podcast which means I can enjoy 20 minute guided workouts for free! Each podcast also features an easy to print yoga pose guide. Just search Yoga Download on iTunes for over 40 free podcasts!

It was the perfect mix of relaxing poses like the above and challenging plank and thread the needles poses.

image I can’t say enough wonderful things about these wonderful 20 minute sessions. They are free, easy to follow, can be done in the comfort of your own home, and leave me feeling relaxed and ready to conquer a homemade dinner!

Tonight’s dinner was another healthy and easy dinner inspired by Theodora’s pasta bowls: whole wheat pasta+vegetables+protein. In less than 15 minutes we whipped up a delicious dinner that was a nice change from our usual takeout or chicken and vegetables.

My First Session With a Personal Trainer

Since joining Equinox a year and a half ago, I’ve considered enrolling the help of a trainer. Everyday, while at the gym, I see the trainers working with clients on a one on one basis and dream of the results this partnership delivers.

Finally, after much convincing from Bo and analyzing my training plan, I decided to invest in a single training session. What harm could one session do to my wallet or my overall fitness. I assumed I’d learn some helpful tips and tricks and them apply them to my weekly training plan.

Wednesday evening, after a long day of work, I met with Lauren for my first official training plan.

It’s amazing how much these two little items can do in an hour! The stopwatch held me accountable and challenged me while the pen captured all my initial results.

Lauren is a very functional trainer, focusing on full body movements versus isolating single body parts. Our time together was short and sweaty; each exercise pushing me beyond my comfort zone in the best way possible. I’m not going to lie when I say that I was worried about my training appointment all day. How would my body react to new challenges? What if I couldn’t complete an exercise?

The great thing about having a trainer is that all my fears were swept away as she was there to talk me through each exercise, ensure I didn’t injure myself through incorrect form, and motivate me through the third and final set.

Our first session consisted of 40 minutes strength, 5 minute abs, and 15 minutes of deep stretching due to my chronic tightness.

During the strength session we conquered some of the most intimidating but effective exercises:

  • Squats with 60 pounds of weight
  • Assisted pullups
  • Walking lunges with 5 pound weights in each hands
  • Shoulder presses with 12.5 dumbells
  • Combination standups with 10 pound medicine ball

By the end my legs and arms were quivering. There is clearly a difference between muscle endurance and muscle strength. It’s amazing that I can run a half marathon one day but doing 3 sets of walking lunges makes me want to cry.

The most exciting moment, was when I conquered my fears of the assisted pull up machine. I’ve seen this machine in the gym for years but never understood how the weight settings worked. As you’ll recall from my diagnostic session with Lauren, one of my goals is to complete one unassisted pull-up. Wednesday, I successfully started down my path by completing 3 sets of 12 assisted pull-ups on the machine, while focusing on proper form. Believe it or not, you’re supposed to lead with your chest not your chin.

Since Lauren knows that I’m reviewing our sessions on my blog, she was more than willing to snap pictures of me during the final set. The form can use some improvement, but this picture is proof that I faced my fears!

By the end of my hour session, I was sold on the benefits of a trainer. As of now, I’m investing in one session per week and will capture each sessions experiences and learning on the blog for your benefit and reference. This being said, if you have any questions for my trainer, Lauren, please let me know.

Friday Favorites: Running Edition

It’s Friday night and I’m sitting at home enjoying a glass of wine and a bowl of cereal. You can’t get much classier than that, can you?

Unfortunately, while Bo and I have lots to toast to tonight, he is unfortunately still at the office. Luckily for me, that means I have time to spend sharing with you guys the things I’m loving right now!

Today’s Friday Favorites will revolve around all the wonderful running things I’m enjoying these days!

Running Tank

I’ve had a hard time historically, finding a workout tank that will move with me from running to yoga without leaving my belly exposed or falling around my head during downward dog. Luckily, Lululemon has come to the rescue with a wonderful tank that not only breathes, but also stays in place. I am absolutely loving my inner strength tank which I have in 2 different colors!

Best Place for Running or Workout Playlists

I love finding new workout songs as I believe the make even the most boring of treadmill runs fly! While Caitlin and Jes normally feaure some great playlists on their blog, I just discovered another great website which features songs and playlists to match your workouts! Running Playlist uploads a new playlist at least once a week which also lets you know the average BPM it matches. They have playlists featuring The Doors, Glee, and even a direct from Texas country playlist! I love that they feature a sidebar showing all the different playlist categories offered. I found a few new songs on the site this week alone, including a few country favorites.  In addition, since many people have asked, below is my most recent playlist!

Best Post Run Stretch Session

Unfortunately for my muscles, I rarely spend enough time stretching before or after my runs, whether long or short. I’ve tried to focus on yoga more during this training cycle, in hopes that my legs and body will thank me. Thus far, it is working wonderfully! I’ve found these online yoga programs very helpful since they are short, focused, and accessible almost anywhere! Make it your goal to fit at least one quality yoga session into your week and at least a 10 minute stretching and rolling session into your post long run routine.
