Four Years Later

When we said “I do” in front of our family and friends four years ago, neither of us knew what the future would hold. We knew that there was a party to be had with 250 of our closest friends and that we were closing out six years of dating and kicking off a new chapter in our life together. But beyond that, we barely knew what time our flight to Anguilla was Monday morning. We were in love and knew that through love and faith all things were possible.

We never talked about a clear plan for the future. While some couples have clearly defined and agreed upon 2, 3, 5 or even 10 year plans that just isn’t us. Though we are both extremely type A people, when it comes to our personal lives we live in the moment. Once upon a time I thought I would be having children by the time I was 30. Well kids, spoiler alert, I turn 30 in 10 days and am not in my 3rd trimester or even 1st. When the time comes, we will embrace and be thankful for the joy children will bring to our lives. But for now, we have truly loved supporting and growing together over the past few years.

Starting a life together in a new city is never easy. Our parents, who we love and respect more than they will ever know, conveniently live ten miles from each other in Savannah. We have been at least a 2 hour flight from our rocks for 7 years now. The distance forced us to depend on each other not only as husband and wife but as each others friends and advocates. Neither of us knew many people in New York so part of our first year of marriage was establishing a network of friends. But over time those friends came and with those friends came social commitments and wonderful opportunities.

I call year two and three the year of too much. We were over scheduled, over committed and were constantly on the go. Don’t get me wrong. I am thankful for each of the memories whether tropical vacations, ski weekends, late nights out having one too many drinks, the race weekends with friends, blog travels, or trips to either ends of the United States to visit friends. Both sets of parents told us that eventually we’d burn out. We needed to find a balance and take time for ourselves. By November of last year we realized that it was time to slow down a bit. For six months we intentionally started reducing the number of commitments on our calendar, ensuring that there was proper time for just the two of us. I will forever cherish our 3rd year, which we kicked off ice skating arm in arm at Rockefeller Center.

That night was magical. We talked about our life in New York City and how the city with so many rough edges truly felt like home. We reflected on our marriage, laughing at the many bumps we’d lived through whether it be the financial crisis, new jobs or injuries. Little did we know that just a few months later we would be given the opportunity of a lifetime and embrace that, just as we did our move to New York City. The past six months have taught me more about relationships and marriage than the months and years before. This move has brought our relationship full circle to now we once again depend on each other for strength and support. Living in two separate cities in a foreign country could easily have been the downfall of our marriage. Instead, today we are closer than ever before. Things aren’t always as rosy and simple as an Instagram filter.

As I look back on our four years together and the more than 50 years of marriage between our two parents, there is one thing that stands out.

Life is filled with bumps. The only way to become stronger is to embrace them early and communicate often as you navigate over the bumps together.

November Link Love

Tuesday is quickly becoming my favorite day of the work week.

Due to relaxing Monday nights, I tend to get to the office bright and early, before 7am! The extra few hours helps me get ahead on email and work before the meetings begin. Lunch hour is spent upstairs in our office gym sweating through 45 minutes of Body Pump while hoping to learn even just one new French word each class. Today I learned épaules (shoulders) during our shoulder and back set. After experiencing my first Swiss manicure and pedicure this evening I’ve spent the past few hours in the kitchen. I am covered in flour doing my best to whip up an anniversary surprise for Bo. If my oven has anything to do with it this will be a 3rd failed attempt. While I’m getting my hands covered in flour and eggs, here are a few of my favorite links for you to enjoy!

    We are hosting 11 of our Geneva friends along with one of our best friends from New York, Michael, for Thanksgiving dinner this year. Our dinner will be similar to the United Nations with the countries of Belgium, France, Scotland, Czech Republic, and United States represented at one table! While each person is bringing either wine, appetizer, dessert or side dish to share, Bo and I are excited to spend some time in the kitchen together cooking the turkey and some of our favorite side dishes together. Right now we’re trying to figure out how to make our way too old oven work as the shelf has a horrible tilt which results in uneven cooking!

    November Goals

    Happy Tuesday! November has arrived and with that, the promise that winter is quickly approaching! Check out the view from my desk this morning. Yes, that white line is the first snow which fell in the mountains last night! Soon we will be spending our weekends skiing and enjoying the cold weather but for now, I’m more than happy to enjoy a few more weeks of Autumn in Geneva and London. Afterall, the meteorologists and Farmer’s Almanac all predict another year of colder than normal temperatures and heavy snow for Europe. In advance of Winter and the holiday chaos, I find November to be a great month to reset after marathon training.

    Now that the marathon is over it’s time to redefine my goals. A creature of habit who needs constant motivation, I never like going more than two weeks without an end goal in mind. November is all about strength, both in mind and muscle.

    Mind: This evening Renaud eagerly asked me when we could begin running together. I laughed, not taking him seriously. Then I realized he wasn’t joking. “You have a trail race to win in June afterall Ashley.” I laughed at him knowing damn well that there is no way I’m going to win a trail race in June. In fact, I’ll be lucky if I can run the entire thing considering the elevation change and the fact that it will be my first. But, then as he continued to ask me when we could run and if he can coach me, I realized that my mind was getting in the way. I absolutely loved running the Saleve with Renaud back in February when I was a guest in his home and had no choice.  Why is it that I’ve lived here for four 3.5 months and haven’t been back up those challenging trails? My goal is to run with him at least once a week this month beginning with an after work trail run tomorrow night followed by a jaunt up the Saleve next Saturday. It’s going to be hard but until I get out of my own head I will never get stronger.

    Muscle: Since moving to Geneva, strength training has taken a back seat. While I am still climbing stairs and walking a great deal daily, I would like to regain some of the strength I built during my year of personal training and then Barry’s Bootcamp and Uplift classes. I am doing this by getting back into the habit of doing pushups and planks daily in addition to two dedicated strength workouts each week. Today I finally took advantage of the lunch time Body Pump class offered in my office gym. It was fully in French and the weights were in kilograms which resulted in some weight and plate confusion but overall I loved every, sweaty minute! It was also a good wakeup call as I could feel my glutes engaging and left the class quivering all over. Bodypump 87 is definitely a challenging workout filled with lots of squats, lunges, chest presses, and clean and press!
