The Color Run London Recap

Yesterday I finally participated in my first Color Run – The Color Run UK: London!

Leah, Laureen, Jessica, me and Charlie

Before we get into the details of yesterday’s experience, let’s take a step back to talk about the fact that The Color Run movement is only 2 years old. I can’t believe they are taking place in so many cities across the world after just starting back in January 2012. According to Wikipedia, Travis Snyder started The Color Run as a way to encourage people of all abilities to run together for fun. The color portion was inspired by the Indian festival, Holi, and Disney’s World of Color.

Now that we have that little bit of history behind us, let’s get back to yesterday’s event – the London Color Run. Charlie and I hopped on the tube, or shall I say multiple different tubes, about 1.5 hours before the start as we knew it would take us at least an hour to get out to Wembley Stadium, where The Color Run was taking place. We had decent luck with our transfers and arrived with time to spare and were able to easily meet the other ladies who waited for us in the tub station. Leah even had fun orange tutus for us to wear during the race, leftover from another running event! The tutus added an extra hint of fun to our costume and helped us keep track of each other in the crowd.

Like many other 18,000 people who ran yesterday, we opted to wear the gear that we received with our bib including a t-shirt which Charlie and I both cut to make a bit smaller since the sizing ran large and our sweat bands. Since I wasn’t sure whether the color would wash out of my clothes I wore shoes, socks, shorts and a bra which could be thrown out afterwards if necessary. In the end, I only ended up throwing out the shoes as the color came out of everything else in the wash.

Since the sun was shining and the weather was perfect, we decided to follow the signs towards the starting corrals in hopes of getting a spot in the front. During the race they only let a certain number of runners go at a time so if you want to get done quickly I recommend getting there early and moving as far towards the front of the crowd as possible. We were able to see the starting line from our spot which meant we were able to start in the first group yesterday versus some of the other people who were still waiting to start WHEN WE WERE FINISHING!

The event itself was supposed to start at 3pm but we didn’t cross the starting line until 3:15. Instead of having tons of fun, loud music in the starting area they had one very loud emcee who was randomly shouting at the crowd and throwing out The Color Run gear. While I know his goal was to get people pumped I think an awesome DJ would have been a better option and more fun overall. Hopefully they can add this for next year. Dancing in the starting area, similar to the way we did before the La Genevoise 5k would have been a blast!

When we crossed the start line at 3:15 we had one goal in mind – have fun! The five of us decided to stick together and run in between each of the five color stations which were spaced approximately 1k apart throughout the course. Each color station featured 10-15 volunteers who were throwing handfulls of dyed corn starch at us as we passed. The orange one seemed to be the longest while the blue volunteers seemed the most aggressive with their color handfulls! My personal favorite was yellow!

As we ran down the finishers area we had a great time giving all the kids who were spectating huge high fives!

As you can tell from the pictures we took in the parking lot after finishing, each person was covered in a different level of color based on whether they ran straight through, ran the edges or sprinted through.

We were all SO THANKFUL we wore cheap sunglasses as they were covered after the race. Charlie let me borrow a pair of her fake Ray-Bans which worked perfectly even though by the end we were having to use our fingers as windshield wipers in order to see out of our glasses while running!

There was a party going on in the parking lot complete with music, the same emcee dude and lots of powder being thrown all over. Since we knew we had another hour long trip back home in front of us are group opted to participate in one burst of color powder fun before using the bathroom and heading to the tube station.

In case you’re thinking about running a Color Run in your city, here are a few things to consider:

1) Why are you running it? If the answer is as a PR then this isn’t the best race. Most color runs aren’t timed and it’s tough to run fast on a course with obstacles as fun as color explosions.

2) Make sure to wear shoes, sunglasses, and clothing which can be thrown away afterwards in case the color doesn’t come out. You may also want to leave nice jewelry at home so you don’t risk ruining it.

3) Get there early if you want to start in the first wave as most color runs have a wave start system. If you can’t get there early then get there late so you don’t have to wait around in the crowds for an hour.

4) This type of event is enjoyed far more with friends than solo. Grab a few friends and make an afternoon or morning of it, enjoying frozen yogurt or brunch afterwards!

5) If your Color Run doesn’t have back check, you can run with a backpack that is covered in a trash bag. We saw a number of people doing this on the course and it seemed to work well!

6) If you have room, you may want to a change of clothes or wet wipes or face cloths to wipe the color off you post race and a towel or trash bag to sit on if you’re driving your car home.

7) You can protect your phone, keys, tube pass and other important things by putting them in a Ziplock bag and carrying it in your hand during the race. My bag was COVERED in powder after the race but everything inside was safe and sound!

Are you a Color Run fan or do you think at $30-$40 per person they are too expensive?

Thank you to Leah and Charlie who shared their hilarious and colorful pictures with me for this post along with Living Social UK and The Color Run London for the complimentary bib.

Geneva Half Marathon Race Recap

The Geneva Half Marathon was an awesome race and I’m so excited to do it again next year!

Due to the 8:30am start, Charlie and I were able to enjoy a good night’s sleep before waking up around 6:30. We got dressed, sorted through our race day essentials, ate peanut butter and banana sandwiches and sipped coffee before heading out the door.

We knew that the course conditions wouldn’t be ideal as the wind was howling and the temperatures were in the mid 40s when we left the house. Instead of second guessing our race day outfit choices we stuck with our plan and instead each added a throwaway layer on top which we could wear for the first few miles.

Getting to the starting area was easy for us as it is only 2 tram stops away from my flat. We arrived by 7:40 and within minutes were able to find the special area for corporate sponsor athletes. It was so nice to have warmth, bathrooms, water, bananas, and a dedicated bag check which we could use before the race versus sitting out in the cold. P&G did a great job supporting employees who ran in any of the races this weekend!

The P&G corporate team took a quick team photo before the start which was partial chaos and partial hilarity as the poor photographer tried to heard the runners into a single group photo.

With a few minutes left before the race, a group of us headed into the corrals trying as best as possible to move into the section on our bib. It was crowded but we eventually found ourselves near the 2:00 pacer. The music and energy was amazing as people got pumped to run either 13.1 or 26.2 miles.

Charlie, Laura, Charlie Brown, Emily and I started together as they thought it’d be fun to stick together at the start, doing their part to push me to a PR. The girls and their motivation was exactly what I needed while we stood in the crowd trying to warm up. I decided to give my throwaway top to Charlie Brown who was shivering due to the cold. Stripped down to just my tank and P&G technical shirt paired with compression socks and Lululemon shorts, I was ready to run. Laura and Charlie told me to start my Garmin as we crossed the start but immediately switch it to clock mode. Their sole goal was to pace me to a PR and the only way they wanted to do that was by starting smart.

The start was super crowded and congested but instead of weaving in and out of slower runners, we moved to the right side of the road and just tried to find a comfortable pace and move with the crowd. Instead of putting my headphones in I let the girls constant conversation entertain me. Laura promised to stick with me the entire time while Charlie said she’d go between our pace and the rest of the groups pace, depending on how her legs felt. Based on the elevation chart, I knew the first few miles would be rolling hills but nothing too extreme. image

The first 5 miles were absolutely gorgeous and an area which I had never run. The paved road lead us through flower fields, horse farms and vineyards. None of us could stop smiling as it was so peaceful and relaxing. The girls kept their promise to entertain me as we enjoyed the rolling hills and tried to take our minds off the wind and cold. None of the girls shed their layers until mile 5 or 6, proof of just how cold and windy the course was. (All photos in this post are compliments of Charlie, Leah and Charlie Brown as I was too focused to take any race photos.)

Mile 1: 9:49 (congested start)

Mile 2: 8:57

Mile 3: 8:48

Mile 4: 9:06

Mile 5: 9:10

Mile 6: 9:04

I broke out the Margarita Shotblocks at mile 5, chewing 3 right before the water station. At this point my legs felt great and I was so excited to be running with the ladies. As we caught sight of the lake I realized that based on the way I was feeling, a stretch goal of sub 2 may be possible. image (4)I couldn’t contain my excitement and started chanting sub 2 with the girls as we meandered through a small town. We started a steep 3/4 mile down hill just as we caught sight of the lake. We took this mile a bit faster, stretching our legs out and trying to pick up some time before getting down to the lake. The girls told me to spend this mile focusing on loosening my arms and shoulders and finding my breath. I did just that and started looking forward to mile 7 when we’d see our cheering squad which included Bo, Katie, Sarah and Ugo who is now a year old.

As soon as we hit the lake we were also met with strong winds. I did my best to maintain my pace even though the energy level dropped as we were no longer in new territory. This path along the lake is my regular running path so there were no fun sights or surprises. There were a few people cheering along the lake but I slowly found my legs losing momentum and falling a few steps behind the group. I took my mind off my heavy legs by starting to look for Bo. They were so loud and cheered for everyone in our group while snapping some great photos!

IMG_5910IMG_5905IMG_5908

As you can see, my lovely P&G technical shirt was more than a bit short on me, hence the reason I wore a tank under it for Sunday’s race. I don’t think I’ll be wearing this shirt again as I was more than a bit sub conscious of it during the race and found myself pulling it down every few steps.

Mile 7: 8:45 (downhill)

Mile 8: 9:11

Mile 9: 9:23 (water station)

Mile 10: 8:57

We eventually weaved into the shopping area of Geneva, running down the cobblestone path before crossing a small bridge over the river and looping back out towards the botanical gardens. As soon as my watched beeped, signaling the end of mile 10 my body started to hit a wall. I took a Vanilla Gu in hopes that this would give me some energy and quickly walked through the next water station. I told Charlie and Laura that I was going to give the next 5k every ounce of effort but that I was feeling empty. We saw Jason, Leah’s fiance who gave us a big cheer as we passed. The smile on my face is 100% fake in this picture.

IMG_1407

The ladies said that it should hurt as I’d pushed my legs and pace for the first 10 miles and this is where I needed to dig deep. In retrospect, I probably should have put in my headphones at this point but instead I just kept listening to the sounds on the course and dreading the next 5k. These miles went on forever as the road looped us down to the botanical gardens and cut back and forth through the town versus taking the straight, shorter path I thought we were taking. We also had two hills in this portion which I am sure were nothing on an elevation map but at that point they felt a bit like Everest.

Charlie and Laura made sure that I didn’t stop to walk instead convincing me that jogging was better than walking at this point. These girls were my rocks. Without them I would have never kept moving on at a steady jog as my whole body ached. I wanted to cry as the wind made every mile feel longer than the last.

As soon as we finally exited the botanical gardens I knew we were on our way back. We passed the hotels and finally crossed back to the Mont Blanc bridge. None of us could see a finish line so we didn’t know whether we had to run back into the park, where the 5k had ended the previous day. Suddenly I heard Charlie scream SPRINT. I pushed forward with all my effort, possibly moving some people aside who were leisurely making their way to the finish line. I was so focused on finishing that I didn’t even notice Bo cheering on the sidelines, snapping the below pictures.

Mile 11: 10:00

Mile 12: 9:59

Mile 13: 9:40

Mile 13-13.2: 9:14 pace

At this point I hadn’t looked at my watch since the 10k split. I was worried that the slower final 5k had killed my hopes for a PR but as I clicked over to my stopped watch I saw the beautiful number 2:03:01 – a PR by more than 2 minutes!

I was tired and in pain but so thankful for the PR. Deep down I started the day hoping for a sub 2 hour half marathon. Part of me was disappointed for a minute until I realized that considering the wind and my strong effort, I should be nothing but happy. A PR is a PR and I know that sub 2 hour half marathon will come soon – hopefully this year!

Our group quickly reunited in the P&G tent to celebrate multiple PRs and a great half marathon. Huge congrats to Ranald who ran a sub 1:30 half – crazy impressive effort!

IMG_8112IMG_5922IMG_5926IMG_5928

All I wanted after the race was water and a banana though the rest of the girls were more than excited to enjoy the post race cakes, cheese, espresso, and dried meats! After 30 minutes or so we headed out to the lake so I could follow through on my promise. During the 5k on Saturday the girls insisted they could pace me to a PR. I laughed and said that if they could pace me to a PR I’d return the favor by jumping in the lake.

IMG_8128

The girls quickly realized that I am a girl of my word and my legs were very appreciative for the cold ice bath!

Thank you to everyone for your positive thoughts, congratulations, and support during this training cycle especially the Team Naturally girls and Emily who were by my side for every mile and for Bo who was the most incredible cheerleader and supporter all weekend!

La Genevoise 5k

Today I finally ran my first race in Geneva! The Geneva 5k or La Genevoise 5k was such a fun race to run with the ladies!

Before the race we picked up Charlie from the airport who flew in from London early this morning. We headed back to the bib pickup area so she could grab her bib and shirt before a few hours of relaxation.

IMG_5894

A few of us decided to get the men’s shirts in place of the women’s as they are a longer cut. We stood out in the crowd of pink shirts during the race as many other women wore the pink technical shirt given out for the race.

IMG_5896

Before the race Charlie and I caught up over lunch at Mango Deck where we each had the goat cheese salad complete with pears and hazelnuts! The salads were HUGE but the perfect lunch before what will surely be an evening filled with bread and pasta.

2014-05-03 12.23.15

Fifteen minutes before the race we met Emily and the Team Naturally Run girls near the Flower Clock, a local icon, so we could run the race together. Most of us are running the half marathon or marathon relay tomorrow so our plan was just to enjoy the race together.

2014-05-03 13.45.37

We made it into the corrals just in time to join the warm-up party. I kid you not when I use the word party as they had the techno music blasting and kept yelling in French that it was party time!

2014-05-03 13.56.362014-05-03 14.02.21

Just as the race started the blue sky and bits of sunshine broke through the ominous clouds allowing us to enjoy 30 minutes of sunshine during the race. The course took runners over the bridge and along the lake before turning around and looping back to Jardin Anglais. Emily and I pointed out sites along the way as this is our normal running route together.

As soon as we started running we were all very pleased with our decision to just enjoy the run versus racing it as the course wasn’t PR friendly. There were many walkers and slower runners which blocked the paths since the course was so narrow. In addition, for future reference, there is no water along the course so for those who like to drink water as you run, bringing your own water is a must.

Just how much fun we had during the 5k is hard to capture in photos. Needless to say, the five of us who ran together were laughing and talking so much that we were surprised how quickly the turnaround point came up.

We finished in under 30 minutes, keeping just under a 10 minute pace for the race. After finishing we were greeted with medals, oranges, bananas, and reusable gold water bottles compliments of Tupperware.

What better thing to enjoy after a race than Laduree macarons?
