Core Fusion Yoga Review

Over the last few months, I’ve seen many of my fellow NYC bloggers talk about the joys of staring their Tuesday morning’s with Core Fusion Yoga.  Curious about the class, I found this information on their website:
CORE FUSION® YOGA

Developed by Elisabeth Halfpapp, one of the innovators of Core Fusion®, Core Fusion® Yoga is yet another transformational experience efficiently programmed into a 60-minute class that is fueled by music. Designed to shift your energy and improve overall wellbeing, Core Fusion® Yoga inspires guests with a combination of yoga asanas that raise the body’s heat and increase cardio endurance, intense core functional training to strengthen and tone the core, Qi Gong circular movements, and stretching to move energy and produce a state of inner calm and balance. Note: Previous yoga experience is recommended.
Last night I had a sudden surge of inspiration to enjoy some morning yoga and immediately remembered this class. This inspiration found it’s root in multiple places:
1. I was so tight from last week’s mileage increase that I couldn’t tough the floor
2. My entire body felt like one big knot
3. It would help prepare me for what I knew was going to be a long, hard Tuesday
I was elated to find that the Exhale Spa in Soho still had vacancies in their 7am Core Fusion Yoga class. The class was taught by Kayleigh Pleas and was only two subway stops away from Gramercy. I couldn’t wait!
I did some research and found out from Dori that the Soho location does not have a shower since it is a temporary location. Therefore, I packed an emergency kit containing face wash, Olay face wipes, deodorant, baby powder, and mattifying powder. I knew that this would allow me to clean up after the class in case I sweated more than normal.
I was actually pretty nervous for this class as it had been a few weeks since my last yoga class and I wasn’t sure what level the class would be. However, as soon as I entered the building from the pouring rain, I was put at ease. Kayleigh met me as I entered the studio with a warm smile. She immediately asked me about any injuries and whether I’d taken the class previously. I explained my running soreness in hopes that she would build the class to meet those needs. She smiled and said that she was sure the flow movements would help.
Our class started on time with about 10 fellow morning birds joining me in the class. There were women of all ages and shapes. Kayleigh, a vibrant, smiling gal was our teacher. One of the things I love about their website is that you can read about your teacher ahead of time. This allows you to find teachers who match your personality. For example, I knew that Kayleigh was a gymnast, lead fluid classes, and focuses on exercise as medicine for the soul.
Kayleigh turned on soft rock music which played the entire time and included songs such as Clocks and other mellow yet light tunes. I really enjoyed the music as it helped with the flow and to get me moving.  It was a refreshing change from my regular yoga class.  We started the class in a traditional yoga method as she took us through a series of sun salutations. This class definitely makes you break a sweat as she challenges you to hold positions, complete multiple yoga pushups, and plank challenges. The entire time though she stressed that we should each focus on our own abilities. She was also very involved, walking around to each student during their practice and adjusting their form.  This continued throughout the first thirty minutes of class during which most of it was very traditional vinyasa flow yoga movements. Many of the moves were harder than normal due to my shortened, tight muscles. But, I loved feeling my body loosen with each new movement. I appreciated the fact that Kayleigh was very clear in her yoga directions and took her time explaining movements if people needed help. She also showed a few modifications throughout the class.
The second half of the class revolved around two evil cork blocks, multiple chair pose sections, and our body weight. This section was all about strengthening and toning. Very reminiscent of a traditional Core Fusion class, we did multiple thigh and butt exercises incorporated into traditional yoga poses and balancing poses.  In addition, we did more planks, some body lifts, and one movement where we lifted ourselves with our hands on the cork blocks!  The class ended with about 7 minutes of abdominals including Core Fusion’s infamous c-curve abdominal exercises. Kayleigh was very helpful during this exercise insuring that each student was engaging their core in the proper manner. As always, this section was killer for me as we moved from c-curve to boat pose. But, the great music continued to help take my mind off of the work and make the class fly by! Before I knew it class was over.

This class was the perfect way to begin my Tuesday. I left feeling limber and stretched, full of strength, and smiling from all the positive words and feelings Kayleigh shared with us. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to mix yoga, strength, and mild cardio. This class melts the three together perfectly! You do break a sweat during this class so I suggest bringing sweat supplies like a washcloth, face wash, and perfume if you’re going to do this class at the SoHo location which doesn’t have showers or during a lunch break.

Whole Bag O’ Gluten Free Goodness

On our way to Lauren’s party Sunday, Bo and I had the great opportunity to stop by Union Square. Union Square is one of my favorite places in NYC during the summer months. It is always bustling with excitement and activities including the weekly farmer’s market, musician, and art festivals. It isn’t quite as touristy as other areas of the city north and south of this bohemian hub.

This Sunday was no different than most in that a local festival was taking place. This festival was in honor of NYC Grows. NYC Grows is the New York park restoration campaign.

The event featured many local and eco friendly companies such as Nature’s Path, Stonyfield Farm, Brooklyn co-op, and others. We had the opportunity to try some local sriracha sauce which was AMAZING, sample new smoothies, and try some of the new Nature’s Path products I’ve seen online.

Bo knows he is married to a health and food blogger and therefore grabbed a few extra samples for me to try since I couldn’t reached the table due to congestion. This morning I was able to sample the first of these Nature’s Path treats.

The Organic Whole O’s did not disappoint. Instead, the pleasantly surprised both me and Bo! Neither of us knew what to expect based on the gluten free statements. But, the corn and rice mix was deliciously fresh and crunchy with just a tad of sweetness. There was no cardboard consistency or aftertaste. Instead, these gluten free, wheat free, and trans fat free little o’s were a perfect morning addition to my fruit and yogurt while alsot packing a hearty punch with 3 grams o fiber and only 110 calories. My only complaint is that they are lacking in some of the nutritional content Cheerios provides such as added vitamins and minerals.

However, for someone who has steered away from many of the high sugar cereals of breakfasts past like Honey Nut Cheerios, Puffs, or others this is a perfect substitute. The gluten free characteristic also makes it a great option for those people who have been missing out on the fun and taste of that iconic breakfast cereal in the yellow box! In addition, Whole O’s are sweetened with pomegranate juice! Who knew? The ingredient list is short, sweet, and simple including only FIVE ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic corn flour, organic evaporated cane juice, organic pomegranate juice concentrate, and sea salt!

I really enjoyed this sample of whole grain goodness and will definitely be buying it again soon as it makes a perfect trail mix ingredient, desk drawer treat, and stand by dinner option! I’m looking forward to trying more Nature’s Path products including a few of their new bars which were sampled at the Union Square festival this past weekend.

Thank you Nature’s Path for a great cereal option for those people who are looking for a gluten free option also made with whole grains or for people like me who are merely looking for good taste uncompromised by artificial ingredients!

Your NYC Wellness Retreat

This post had aspirations to be a thorough review of Dasha Wellness- New York’s health and wellness destination. I started writing this post tonight and realized that there was no way to combine all the amazing experiences of Dasha Wellness into one post. It would be too exhausting and WAY too long. Therefore, I am going to save the two aspects, their weight loss plan and their massage aspect for my next post. During that post I will compare and contrast Dasha’s medical massage technique with Equinox’s swedish massage. In addition, I will highlight their amazing 360 degree 12 week weight loss program.
Welcome to Dasha Wellness!
Last Friday night I had the amazing opportunity to spend two hours exploring the newest wellness sanctuary in the heart of New York City, Dasha Wellness. Their entire staff, including the founders Dr. Darren and Shannon Pollack, spent two hours giving me a tour, letting me take a test run on their machines, experience a 1st visit as a new patient would, and introduce me to the benefits of medical massage. It was an amazing experience and a perfect end to a long week. There are many things one sees upon entering Dasha. The space is bright filled with white light and many forms of green- apples, plants, comfortable pillows, and more. The staff is attentive, curteous, and most of all knowlegeable. The facility is immaculate and fresh; filled with life and vitality!

Dasha Welness believes that you should only have to go one place to find all the resources and support needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Most New York residents are too busy to take multiple cab rides or subway trips just to visit their doctor, physical therapist, personal trainer, and pilates instructor. I love this concept because it really is SO true. The amount of delivery food epitomizes resident’s desires for ease and accesibilty. Most people, especially professionals, believe that they work too hard each day to stress themselves out after work as well.

One of my favorite aspects of Dasha is it’s conception. It is truly the dream come true for Dr Darren Pollack and his wife Shannon. The name, Dasha is a combination of their first name’s and the services offered reflect their passions. Dr. Darren Pollack is a board-certified chiropractic physician with over a dozen years of clinical experience in sports medicine and rehabilitation therapy. He prides himself on the fact that he has direct contact with all patients/clients in coordination of Management Plans administered. He is able to bring his broad range of knowlege in multiple techniques such as Active Release Technique, Chiropractic, Graston Technique, and Sports Medicine to Dasha. But it is their passion for health, wellness, and well-being that has allowed Dasha Wellness to evlve into a comprehensive wellness center which revolves around the 360 degree concept developed by Darren and Shannon. Everyone who walks in is an individual and therefore a plan and solution is designed to meet the needs of each patient.

Technology plays an integral role at Dasha. During my tour, Caitlin showed me the workout section. This area features two machines which look foreign to even the biggest of gym rats. The first one I spotted is the SpineForce. This machine addresses problems surrounding the spine and core muscles. The primary part of the machine sis an oscillating platform that challenges the body to stabilize itself during specific movements. The spinal muscles must respond by making adjustments which therefore retrains the core muscles of the spine, strengthinenging and helping prevent injuries. Spine force not only helps injuries but prevents them by improving strength, mobility, balance, neuro-motor equilibrium, flexibility and posture. These improvements are all ideal for back, hips, and shoulder injuries, neuromuscular disorders, core strengthening, fall prevention and balance disorders. I did not have the opportunity to try the machine but I can only imagine how powerful this tool could be for someone who has a previously debilitating injury or spinal weekness. The second machine reminded me of Space Mountain at Disney World. But, do not be fooled, this is no kids ride! The PhysioRED is an FDA-listed device that combines the ease and comfort of a reclined bike with infrared light therapy which means the workout feels like it’s being done in a sauna like heat. By focusing 2,800 watts of infrared light on the body during a vigorous cycling workout, it can help people make improvements in body detoxification, weight and fat loss, muscle toning, cardio health and overall wellness. This is due to the fact that the infrared natural light generates which expands capillaries, warms muscle fibers, and stimulates blood circulation as it penetrates into the skin and underlying tissue. This workout is not for beginners or to be taken lightly. I laughed at the idea of watching Seinfeld while getting a workout but, five minutes into the workout I was sweating and my muscles felt the pressure! My heart was working harder than normal and I quickly realized that this was an amazing cardio workout while also making me feel the same way I do during and after bikrham yoga- 100% detoxed and lighter. I love the fact that they want to make exercise accesible even to the most difficult and reluctant clients. For this reason, the Physiored has a dvd player, tv, and full dvd library that patients may enjoy. A 45 minute bike ride while watching Sex and the City? Yes please!

Corporate Wellness
Dasha Wellness is located at 115 East 57th Street right in the heart of Manhattan. The location is perfect for people who work or life in midtown, eastside, and even the west side as it’s near multiple subways, Central Park, and within walking distance of Grand Central. Their location has allowed them to focus in two primary areas very well, corporate wellness and personal lifestyle and wellness improvement.
Due to their location, the have quickly developed strong relationships with many large law firms, Bloomberg, Bloomingdales, Shiseido, ING, and more. I strongly believe that they have been able to establish these relationships quickly due to their wonderful client and customer service. They believe that every individual deserves health and wellness services and therefore work with and accept most medical insurance plans. They offer multiple corporate wellness programs but their most popular are their corporate wellness seminars which provide a seminar to meet your company’s needs and their health expos. The goals of their seminars are to educate and inspire employees to mae better health decisions and improe their lives by implementing health concious behaviors. The seminars can be half days, full days, or even just a lunchtime meeting. The topics are very applicable such as desk stretching, nutrition, protecting your back, setting goals for your own life, and even an awesome ergonomics consultation which will help employees prevent strain and injuries! My favorite option is the stress down days. I’m currently working with my company to plan one of these for all employees in late April. The event includings bringing Dasha to our office and conducting light testing, posture analysis, reflexology, fitness assesments, blood pressure tests, on site massage therapists, and the benefits of exercise ball chairs. I wonder what my manager would say if I came in one day and traded out my chair for a ball? 🙂 If you are interested in bringing Dasha to your NYC office, contact Dasha at info@dashawellness.com or 212-755-5500.
*Tomorrow’s post will discuss the personal side of Dasha- their 360 Weight Loss program and their massages!
