Healthy Travel: Running in Las Vegas

This week, my posts will revolve around Las Vegas and staying healthy while traveling. A week in the city of sin can alter a healthy lifestyle very quickly if you’re not careful. Therefore, one of my goals for the week is to stick with my workout routine. I’ll have to alter it slightly since there aren’t spin bikes in the hotel gym, but I will still be doing my resistance/weight training and running.

This morning when I saw this amazing view out my window I knew there was no question of whether to run outside or inside. Since the temperature was only 53 degrees I chose to run in my Lululemon crop pants and my new Nike Run NYC technical shirt.

Within minutes I was out the door, using my Garmin to keep track of my distance. I chose a simple route,  running up the strip and back, so I didn’t have to worry about safety or getting lost. I captured pictures for y’all during my run so you could experience the Las Vegas strip, in the bright morning sun.

I really enjoyed my route except for a few things which I forgot about running in Las Vegas:

  • During my 3.2 mile run there were 5 stoplights, 1 of which I made. Therefore I had to reroute a number of times.
  • You have to run up the escalators or stairs at every crosswalk which tired my legs out quicker than normal.
  • Even though the Weather Channel says its only 53 degrees out there it felt like 83!
  • It is really, really dry and my body still hasn’t adjusted.
  • The altitude here is 2,000 feet which is a big difference from running at sea level.

My plan is to run outside at least a few more times this week and hopefully I’ll see improvements each time as I continue to hydrate and fuel for the week’s activities.

Question: Do you exercise when you travel for business and/or pleasure?

As a business traveler, I know all too well the potential pitfalls so traveling. Exercising on a trip is sometimes challenging, but not impossible. Congrats for getting out there!

It looks beautiful there! I don’t work out as much as I do at home when I’m out of town, but I try to. Have a great vacation!

LOVE all the pictures! The one of you with your iphone is bad ass.

I always plan on exercising when I travel. It’s such a fun way to get out and see new cities. And I feel better about my indulgent eating when I get my sweat on!

I love that run NYC t-shirt. The Rock N Roll 1/2 marathon series has a vegas race…AT NIGHT!!! I’d love to do it!! It’s in December, so I’m still thinking about it. I try to workout by doing a lot of walking while traveling and eating kids meals for portion control when going out to restaurants for meals.

That photo you snapped of yourself running is amazing. Tiny waist, thick muscular legs, you look like a fit, toned runner girl!

So awesome that you’e able to fit runs into your time out there in LV! I spent the weekend in Nashville (which is AWESOME, btw) and had high hopes of running while I was there. I now know that bachelorette parties and running do nto mix 🙂
If I’m traveling for a reason other than constant partying, then yes, I will get a run or two it. It’s always refreshing to run a new route!

i am in Vegas about 3 times a year for work, and while i don’t run, i do get up and do a 2 to 3 mile walk in the morning on the strip. There is something special about being up when the city is still recovering from the night before and the streets aren’t packed.

If you have time i would highly recommend eating at Sea Blue in the MGM Grand. The menu is crazy good, fantastically fresh fish, and an amazing build your own salad menu.

    Enjoy your time!

I ran up and down the Strip when I was in LV last December – I loved it, the weather at that time of the year was perfect for running!!

I hear you on the stairs over the crossings – I took the first set like a pro but towards the end looked more like someone just crawling home from a night partying in the City of Sin!

    Love your blog! 🙂
